More Behind the Door: What’s In A Name?

Determining a name for a business is not an easy task. You want to select a name that fits the vision, represents what you intend to offer, and stands the test of time. The name should be easily recognizable and memorable, but shouldn’t be overly generic. It needs to be unique, but not too complicated. It has to be able to grow with you.

When our business plan was being developed in 2008, we had a shortlist of potential contendors.

A few names considered were:

  • Studio C (too generic)

  • The Dance Atelier (too complicated)

So, how did we land on Stage Door Dance Productions?

In Trash The Trophies, our Founder/ CEO, Chasta Hamilton details the inspiration behind the decision:

In November 2008, I was in New York City seeing a binge of Broadway shows. As I passed the stage doors on Broadway, I thought about everything the stage door represents: accomplishment, hard work, storytelling, performance, connection, community, and focus. At that time, amid the magic of the Great White Way, I knew the studio was meant to be called Stage Door Dance Productions.

As we prepare to enter our 14th season (!) of dance education and inspiration, we love this name for our business and our brand. Every time a dancer walks through the doors of Stage Door Dance Productions, we want them to feel that spark of excitement and possibility that a stage door evokes.

Our “More Behind the Door” Series will share “backstage” and “behind the scenes” insights to the development of Stage Door Dance Productions. If you’re interested in being a part of our community, email info@stagedoordance.com!
